Katelyn M Sweeney Ching hails from the neighboring town of Kaneohe. She attended the Honolulu Waldorf School and played #1-2 for Maryknoll and Pac-3, respectively. She was a member of Team Kailua from age 9-18.
Katelyn competed for Wellesley College, a Division 3 school in the Northeast NEWMAC conference. Wellesley achieved a national ranking of #10 during her senior year, and held the conference title from 2004-2008. She was nominated for the ITA Scholar-Athlete award in 2009. She considers her decision to play college tennis as one of joy and accomplishment. As a coach for young players, she hopes to emphasize how success on the court can translate into success in the classroom, and vice versa.
Before coming to Bruce Nagel Tennis Academy, Katelyn worked as an assistant coach for the Kailua Recreational Center, Hawaii Pacific Tennis Academy, Useless Bay Tennis and Golf Club in Washington, and has helped run clinics in Wellesley, MA. She also volunteered with Wellesley Tennis for the Acing Autism tennis program in Wayland, MA.
Off the court Katelyn enjoys reading, cooking/eating, and studying (seriously!). She graduated in June with Honors in Music and a minor in Philosophy. She was the 2009 recipient of the Hubert Weldon Lamb Prize for her work in composition. She hopes to pursue a Doctorate of Musical Arts in Music Composition. She also teaches piano. |
